Job Description / Statement of Duties

The Art Education Department prepares students to be skillful, imaginative, and socially engaged teachers and artists. Art Education offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Masters Programs, and Certificate Programs in teacher preparation. The department nurtures students to develop contemporary and historical understandings of the theories and practices of learning, art, and teaching. Reporting to the Chair of Art Education, the role of the Certification and Teaching Internship Specialist is meant to provide professional vision and to manage the certification and licensure requirements of the profession.

1. Work collaboratively with the Department Chair in long-term and day-to-day management of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) certification and internship processes.
2. Serve as liaison to DESE and shepherd all aspects of the MA DESE accreditation process, guiding students from matriculation through licensure.
3. In coordination with the Art Education Department, oversee student teaching placements, including placing eligible students at field-based sites, relationship-building and establishing communication systems with supervising practitioners and fieldwork sites.
4. Maintain, facilitate and report evidence-based data related to educator preparation. Translate to and from the field about curricular decisions related to fieldwork sequence in pre-practicum and studio courses.
5. Oversee and supervise staffing and training for onsite supervising practitioners and MassArt program supervisors (student teaching supervisors).
6. Facilitate public school partnerships with a focus on Boston Public Schools.
7. Coordinate non-school based internships and work in concert with the Art Education Department, MassArt Internship Office, the Center for Art and Community Partnerships, and external partners.

Required Minimum Qualifications

1. 5+ years experience in Pre-K through 12 schools
2. Working Knowledge in teacher certification and licensure
3. Experience with database maintenance, interpretation, and reporting
4. Bachelors degree

Other Considerations

1. Masters degree
2. Strong project management, organizations, and analytical skills
3. 3+ years’ experience in public urban schools
4. Experience in and/or knowledge of visual art studio practice
5. Experience with data systems management
6. Interpersonal and collaboration skills
