Job Description / Statement of Duties

Reporting to Academic Affairs, Studio Managers are professional level staff members that serve as College-wide resources. The primary role of Studio Managers is to support students and faculty through management of educational facilities and technical assistance with curriculum. Studio Managers have responsibility for the safe and effective operation of instructional spaces specific to their discipline(s), including some or all of the following: shops, classrooms, studios, computer labs, and teaching galleries.

Studio Managers serve a key role in supporting academic functions, working collaboratively with faculty, administration, and staff. The manager will work with the department Chair/Area Coordinator, departmental faculty, Academic Affairs, facilities personnel, health and sustainability personnel, public safety, finance personnel, and other departments, as needed.

Job Description
Support the academic function of the department through coordination with the department Chair/Area Coordinator, departmental faculty, and Academic Affairs on the proper and safe use of department equipment, machinery, and facilities.

  • Work with the department Chair/Coordinator and department faculty in the purchase and use of equipment and supplies. As appropriate, make recommendations for specific equipment, supplies and space to meet the curriculum needs as identified by the faculty.
  • Work with the department Chair to develop and/or monitor the department budget for equipment and supplies.
  • Work with Department chair as appropriate to coordinate the schedule of classes/lab space and other uses of departmental designated spaces.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment; where students are allowed to use college equipment outside of the classroom, develop and/or maintain a “check out” system. Source, order and monitor use of supplies/consumables.
  • Establish and oversee procedures for the proper and safe use of equipment by faculty and students, including developing manuals, providing schedules for use, providing demonstrations and insuring proper instruction and/or supervision for non-classroom and independent use of the equipment.
  • Coordinate with Information Technology as appropriate to maintain computers, scanners, printers, presentation equipment, department specific software, and other technologies.
  • Hire, train and supervise contract employees, students, and monitors as needed.
  • Depending on assignment, may participate with the department Chair and the Facilities department on changes and upgrades to department facilities.
  • Make recommendations for purchase of capital equipment.
  • Make minor repairs to equipment and machinery; make recommendations for major repairs or decisions regarding repair or replacement.
  • Serve as a liaison between faculty and students.
  • Other Duties: Assist other departments and studio managers as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

1. BA or BFA degree in Animation, Film or Video, or equivalent experience.
2. Experience with use and maintenance of animation equipment and software.
3. Proficiency in Adobe suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, Animate).
4. Demonstrated ability and willingness to stay current and learn appropriate technologies, processes and methods, and incorporate change into the job.
5. Clear potential or demonstrated ability to work effectively with and benefit a diverse community.
6. Organizational and professional skills necessary to work independently as well part of a team.
7. Physical requirements: Must be able to sit for extended periods of time, climb stairs, bend, stretch, reach, and carry up to 50 lbs in the context of regular office operations

Other Considerations

1. Animation industry experience or studio practice in Animation, Film, photography or Video.

2. Experience with any or all of the following:

  • analog and digital photographic technologies;
  • Dragonframe stop motion software;
  • Autodesk Maya;
  • motion control systems

3. Previous experience as a Studio Manager or equivalent position in a College or teaching setting.
