Job Description / Statement of Duties

Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston is seeking candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position in Graphic Design at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning in Fall of 2018. As the nation’s oldest public four-year college of art and design, MassArt has a rich history serving a highly-motivated body of students from a wide range of backgrounds.

The successful candidate should have significant experience in the practice and teaching of graphic design, and as a core partner in our program should be able to teach a wide range of courses in the Graphic Design curriculum at all levels in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. The successful candidate will have experience in program development and assessment, provide academic and professional advising to students, and have the ability to assume departmental leadership in the future.

Required Minimum Qualifications

1. A Masters degree in Graphic/Communication Design from an accredited university, and demonstrated experience in the teaching and practice of print and non-print design, typography, design research, branding, and publication design. Candidates should have a record of contributing to critical discourse in these areas, and through their work demonstrate an awareness of the cultural context of the discipline.
2. 5+ years of professional working experience in the field of communication design or related area.
3. 2+ years of teaching experience at the college or university level.
4. Candidates must be committed to teaching and working at an educational institution that highly values its diverse faculty and students.
5. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence of the academic community through their research/creative activities, teaching, and service.

Other Considerations

1. Able to teach at all levels of communication design courses, both undergraduate and graduate.
2. Some experience in teaching design research, information design, and experience design (UX).
3. Well versed in the technology currently used in the professional practice of communication design, and willing to self-educate about technology as standards and practice change.
4. Demonstrate significant professional, personal and research design experience, as well as a record of active participation in professional organizations.
5. Knowledge of contemporary theories, principles, and concepts, and the history of graphic design.
6. Knowledge of CSS, HTML, and some coding experience.
7. Experience with departmental or administrative duties a plus.
