Job Description / Statement of Duties

The Sustainability/ Environmental Health & Safety Officer has the administrative and supervisory responsibility for the operation and coordination of the College’s Sustainability and energy management efforts, working with the State Office of Sustainability, students, faculty and staff to improve the College’s sustainability profile and with staff to improve energy efficiencies. Responsible for updating inventories of greenhouse Gas/Energy conservation and other natural resource efficiency projects at the College. As Environmental Health & Safety Officer, to provide leadership in the design, implementation and maintenance of full scale environmental health and safety practices/programs to provide for the safety of the campus community and surrounding environment as mandated by City/State/Federal regulations. Perform the full spectrum of tasks related to acquisition, storage, safe use and disposal of hazardous materials and training in safe practices. Ensuring the College is in compliance with all “safety regulations” and reporting and responding to safety issues, and serving as a resource for safety practices, procedures and materials. 24-hour on call status is required to respond to emergencies.

The Sustainability, Environmental Health & Safety Officer reports to the Executive Director of Facilities and supervises maintenance Staff, Work-study and interns.


1. Direct implementation of measures of compliance with City/State/Federal regulations with respect to safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials on an on-going basis. Act as liaison with Public Safety, Physical Plant, Human Resources, academic departments and state and federal regulators, concerning all aspects of environmental health and safety.
2. Serve as College’s Health & Safety Officer. Inspect College facilities and ensures that hazardous materials are properly identified, labeled, inventoried and stored.
3. Responsible for oversight of the proper storage of all chemical substances and hazardous materials. Insure the proper identification, collection, labeling, record keeping and safe storage of all campus hazardous waste. Responsible for contracting for the removal and proper disposal of all campus hazardous waste by the use of licensed contractors and in accordance with relevant state and federal regulations.
4. Establish protocols and inspection schedules of hazardous waste central storage areas, hazardous waste satellite collection points, academic studios and administrative facilities. Conduct suspect material sampling.
5. Ensures that work performed in the College’s facilities, labs, and studios is conducted in as safe a manner as possible through safety surveys, advising personnel on chemical safety, and providing training as required.
6. Review maintenance and utilities contracts and contractors for sustainability content.
7.Communicate with all levels of management and technical functions of sustainability, safety and energy efficiencies.
8. Manage the College’s Sustainability Plan, providing annual updates to the State regarding goals and accomplishments.
9. Monitor, assess, and summarize relevant environmental trends, regulatory and compliance requirements, and applicable standards.
10. Provide practical and technical support for environmental compliance.
11. Develop methodologies and protocols for implementing ecological stewardship.
12. Coordinate the safe removal of hazardous waste in accordance with State and Federal regulations through certified vendors.
13. Develop manuals and recommends policies and procedures for the safe use of chemical substances, hazardous waste management, Right-to­ Know implementation, and general campus safety in compliance with State and Federal regulations.
14. Assist in identifying and correcting potentially unsafe conditions.
15. Serve as a campus resource for safety practices, procedures and materials.
16. Responsible for maintaining proper records and filing reports of chemicals, hazardous waste, and other environmental safety programs.
17. Monitor utility consumption and expenditures and advise supervisor on ad hoc and regular basis.
18. Assist supervisor to manage College’s energy (utility) programs and in developing utility budgets.
19. Research industry trade publications, web sites and other resources for energy rebate and/or other expense saving opportunities and make appropriate recommendations.
20. Acts as Mass Art’s representative during reviews by regulatory agencies. Track environmental legislation and keep administration advised of pertinent changes to the law.
21. Maintain campus chemical inventory and master MSDS files. Prepare and maintain contingency plans, compliance reports, summaries and program documentation for the purpose of completing required government reports related to environmental compliance and safety; these reports include, but are not limited to, the annual air pollution inventory, the biennial hazardous waste report and the Tier II report.
22. Develop and conduct regular training for the campus community.
23. Write agendas and conducts Health/ Safety Committee meetings.
24. Work closely with Physical Plant personnel to perform or contract to have conducted safety inspections, ventilation and air quality surveys, asbestos inspections, and other environmental inspections (water quality, oil storage tanks, power plant emissions, etc.)
25. Ability to take, and read air and water samples.
26. Manage elevator contract.
27. Member of Rapid Response Team.

Required Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, materials engineering or other related discipline .

2. 2+ years practical experience in environmental energy or safety management, product development, and environmental, energy or safety consulting.

3. Strong working knowledge of all State and Federal and local occupational health, safety and environmental regulations.

4. HAZWOPER certification, have, or be able to, obtain asbestos inspector/management planner license.

5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

6. Excellent computer skills to include Microsoft Office Suite, and data management software.

7. Ability to work and manage one’s own projects, developing client relationships and maintaining the quality of the deliverables.

8. Experience working with global laws, regulations, standards, trends, and business practices.

9. Knowledge of the application of sustainable, energy efficient and safety development to buildings.

10. Possession of a valid Massachusetts Drivers License.

11. Knowledge of Right-to-Know law.

12. Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in all facets of the position as described in the duties of the job description.
