Job Description / Statement of Duties

As the oldest freestanding public college of art and design in the country (founded as a normal school for Art Education), MassArt advocates for access to and equity in art and art education. The Art Education department prepares students to be skillful, imaginative, and socially engaged teachers and artists. Offering baccalaureate, masters and certificate programs in teacher preparation, the department nurtures students to develop contemporary and historical understandings of the theories and practices of learning, art, and teaching.

The Art Education Department Chair reports to Associate Dean and the Associate Dean reports to Provost.

We seek an administrative leader to provide professional vision for undergraduate and graduate education programming and to guide and manage the certification and licensure requirements of the profession.

Responsibilities and Duties
• Maintain the mission and help guide the strategic direction of Art Education at MassArt
• Support and work collaboratively with Art Education Department Chair in long-term and day-to-day management of the department
• Maintain, facilitate, report and shepherd all aspects of the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education accreditation process including the maintenance of evidence-based data
• Support and work collaboratively with the Saturday Studios program, as well as youth programs
• Serve as Certification Officer (CAP management, data management, curriculum compliance, and MTEL coordination.)
• Guide students from matriculation through licensure
• Direct Boston Public School Partnership
• Direct Student Teaching Placement, including relationship-building and establishing communication systems with supervising practitioners and fieldwork sites and placing eligible students. Overseeing and supervising staffing and training for onsite supervising practitioners and MassArt program supervisor (student teaching supervisor).
• Oversee non-school based internships and work in concert with MassArt Internship Office, cultural partners, and Center for Art and Community Partnerships
• Coordinate Art Education Graduate Programs (summer programming, admissions coordination, marketing, budget, and faculty)
• Provide support and leadership in establishing fieldwork sequence in pre-practicum and studio courses and structuring programmatic approach to designing and documenting content-specific and pedagogical field based experiences
• Work with Associate Dean of Academic Administration in budget and resource management
• Serve as a representative on institutional committees

Required Minimum Qualifications

1. Ph.D. Ed.D. in education related field
*Degree completion within two years of hire
2. Expertise in teacher certification and licensure
3. Management/supervisory experience
4. Proven experience in collaborative leadership environments

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience in and/or knowledge of visual art studio practice
2. Experience in Higher Education
3. Minimum of three years experience working in Pre-K thru 12 public urban schools
